12 Months of film – April: April Everlasting

Of all of the possible excuses for being extremely late with writing a monthly post (it’s July, for fuck’s sake!), the “everything went well and I don’t know how to put it into words” must be the most insane one. Not that it matters one way or the other, but it’s been gnawing on my consciousness for a while, so now is a good as time as any to get it over with.
Side note: the mental search for the perfect spring-ish movie title that can also be made into a stupid pun, which I tortured myself with for days, failed spectacularly. In my defense, I’m not a cinephile, but a bookworm. Not a particularly smart one, seeing I’ve decided to name movies in the titles of these posts but nevermind that.

Writing about April during a heat wave in the middle of July is a surreal experience, to say the least. I can hardly remember what it felt like — the blissful sleep, the mild weather, the gentle breeze, the whole month of perfect dates, where the only thing you need is a light jacket. The queen of months. April. Perfect for Kodak Portra 160. Both are simple, with a slight pink hue, nice, and easy. Poetic. Familiar.
All of that was the reason I decided to pair the Portra with Contax 167-MT. Not as gentle as the month or the film used, but beautiful, elegant, with that perfect typography, which I love more than I should. But, mainly, it’s almost completely automatic – except for the manual focus – which was a nice change after months of shooting with fully manual cameras. Or, to put it in other words: an easy-breezy month deserves an easy-breezy camera.

The thing is, I should write about Portra now but..should I? What’s there to say that hasn’t been said already? It’s quite a famous film, loved by many and written about by many more. So loved that it borders on pretentious and over-hyped. It’s not. It truly is a great looking film. Soft and warm. Like spring. Or a cat. With that said, and by that I mean my overly poetic description of a piece of colored plastic, here are the photos:

I’d like to repeat this setting, to be honest. Maybe during autumn, in late September, the ultimate orange-coded month (April is pink, yes, and no, October is not orange, it’s brown). We’ll see. Until then, let me just say, this month was a pleasure to shoot, and a pleasure to remember.

Take care, be safe, and make good choices.
