12 months of film – February, part 2: Return of the Zenit

This one will be short and sweet because, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, literally nothing went wrong

…except everything. But this post is about a fresh start. With a different film and a different camera. As I already wrote about Zenit 12XP here, there’s not much to add regarding this camera, except maybe that it’s a great piece of photography equipment and that it’s still one of my faves.

Regarding the film used, I opted out for Agfa Vista 200+, a medium-speed color negative film that was a repackaged Fujifilm stock, unfortunately discontinued in 2018. Agfa Vista 200+ has (had?) vibrant colors, fine grain, and versatility in a variety of lighting conditions, which makes (made?) it usable for general-purpose photography. It’s not Ektachrome, but it gives nice and consistent results. One of those everyday films, which one would use for an afternoon stroll through the neighborhood or a casual weekend barbecue with friends/family. Like a Kodak Gold, only better (to me, at least). So its discontinuity is a shame, but that is the reality of life, I guess. Or the market.

One thing I love about Agfa Vista 200+ is that bluish hue that it splashes over the photos. I’m aware that not everybody (or anybody?) likes that, but differences like these add character to the photo. And as I said before, in analog photography, everything that differentiates what you see and what you get is a plus in my book. Analog has to look and feel different, even a tiny bit. Let digital photography capture things exactly as they are.

Until next time (which will be soon, as it is already almost April), take care.
