It is a bayonet mount with three tabs, a focal flange distance of 45.8mm, and a clockwise lock. The mount features both mechanical communication (aperture stop-down lever and slot-drive AF screw) and electronic communication through 5 electrical contacts (10 contacts on power zoom lenses). The lens mount is incompatible with all other Yashica mounts, including the earlier manual focus Contax/Yashica mount. Although the MA mount bears a strong visual resemblance to the Minolta A mount (both are three-tab bayonet mounts with 5 electronic contacts and slot-drive AF), they are not compatible with each other.

The mount was discontinued in the mid-1990s after only four camera bodies and approximately 20 lenses were produced.

Yashica/Kyocera lenses

Lenses were available branded either as Yashica or as Kyocera.
